Loose man hole covers (2) Virgin Media
Reported in the Pavements/footpaths category anonymously at 09:11, Mon 27 February 2017
Sent to Darlington Borough Council 5 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 990116.
Two Virgin Media CATV man hole covers, immediately beside a large junction box on Warren Street, are loose and make a great deal of noise every time pedestrians use the footpath. Particularly intrusive noise, day and night time. The issue has been apparent for more than a year, and appears to be getting worse.

DBC say they referred this to Virgin Media. Nothing has been done however to remedy the banging noise from the two loose man hole covers.

Still being woken in the middle of the night with these box covers clanking loudly on the pavement outside. Really intrusive noise. Someone stepping on one or both of these is a bit like a gunshot echoing around. It could be easily fixed with some rubber insulation strip, if Virgin Media could be bothered to do it.

These box covers are still loose and are still causing a noise nuisance at all times of day and night. The two covers actually move underfoot when stepped on. The rocking motion causes a loud noise which travels through the gable wall of the adjacent house causing repeated disturbance.

The issue of the loose man hole covers has now worsened. The cement/concrete surrounding one of the loose covers is now cracked and visibly moves underfoot when the covers are stepped on. This is creating an unstable footing for pedestrians and now represents a safety hazard, as well as causing severe noise disturbance. The metal Virgin Media junction box cabinet next to the loose ground covers is also now standing with its doors open and people passing are trying quite noisily (and unsuccessfully) to close them, as the cabinet doors are being left to swing open, partially blocking the walkway.
I have now contacted Virgin Media directly after the referral by Darlington Borough Council back in February resulted in nothing happening. It appears from my telephone calls that no such referral was actually received by Virgin Media from DBC.
I now at least have a job reference number (7824963) for the repair and was initially told (on 11 July 2017) that an engineer would attend within a few hours. I called Virgin Media back on 13 July as no engineer had attended, to then be told it could take seven to ten days for an engineer to attend.
We can see Virgin Media engineers are currently working nearby. At this stage however, still no engineer, still no repair.

Virgin Media sent out a repair man to fix the open cabinet. He said he wasn't the repair man for the loose man hole covers, but when prompted he at least attempted to stop them rattling, using some torn cardboard under the edges. It has actually made one of the covers stop rattling for now but the second one still moves and makes a loud noise underfoot. No sign of the actual repair person attending to date.
