Traffic lights on A38 new South Bristol Link Road Roundabout
Reported in the Traffic lights category anonymously at 19:54, Sun 22 January 2017
Sent to North Somerset Council 2 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 963643.
The South Bristol Link Road opened on the 16th January. I use the A38 daily to commute to work in Bedminster. Since the Link Road opened there have been long tailbacks on the inbound A38 from the new Link Road Roundabout with the A38 back to the Barrow Gurney traffic lights- a distance of at least a couple of miles. In my opinion the lights are incorrectly set up as the majority of traffic at this time is inbound on the A38. There are no tailbacks on the new link road at this point which also crosses this roundabout. I realise that currently the situation is exacerbated as Barrow Gurney is closed to traffic - however, the whole aim of the link road is to reduce traffic on unsuitable roads. Please can the light timing be looked into urgently as it has worsened rather than improved the commuting experience!

The traffic signals are there to balance the flows of the two A-roads that meet at the roundabout. Our engineers are making sure that the timings of the signals are optimised for all users of the road.

These traffic lights are still not working correctly/well for the road set up. People are telgating and traffic is building up, causing driver frustration. When the lights turn green, its letting 1-2 cars through at a time. Please can this be looked into ASAP.

There are some issues with how the signals are operating. There is a phase that is designed to clear the roundabout sections of queues which is being activated more often than expected. This is being investigated by the engineers.

Can someone explain why there are lights ON the roundabout in addition to when you join the roundabout? Only one set of cars can be entering the roundabout at any one time....so let them join the roundabout and get straight off it again, I'm at a loss to understand why halting them at a red light on the actual roundabout assists anyone when no other direction is allowed to enter the roundabout?! Who are they being stopped for? Seems to be that cars get stopped on the roundabout and then tail back to the green light they just went through but aren't stopping to let anyone else move, they're just stopped.

The new A38 roundabout has traffic signals to ensure fair and reasonable balance of traffic flow on the two A roads that meet at the roundabout and to maximise capacity and ensure future traffic growth can be accommodated. There is more detail on the different engineering options that were assessed for the junction in the "Options Appraisal: Engineering Options" document submitted for the public inquiry for the scheme: https://sblpublicinquiry.files.wordpress.com/ 2014/ 01/ 3-02-3-options-appriasal-engineering-options.pdf
