IDVerde continuing to try and behaviour control in Darrick Woods. They have piled another load of dead dumped cuttings across a path to control peoples behaviour rather than used for ecological benefit.

I do understand the ecological rationale behind retaining dead wood and creating dead hedges, and I appreciate the intention to support biodiversity.

However, my concern is less about the principle and more about the application in this particular setting. In heavily used community woodlands such as Darrick Woods, best practice guidance (e.g. from the Woodland Trust) generally suggests that dead hedging and piles of cuttings are:

- Positioned away from desire lines and established paths, rather than used to block them - Constructed in a more deliberate and consolidated way, rather than appearing scattered - Balanced with public access and enjoyment, especially where there is significant daily footfall

At present, some of the cuttings appear to be used to artificially channel movement by obstructing natural routes, which risks:

- Creating a negative visitor experience and visual impact - Encouraging people to create new informal paths around the obstructions (potentially increasing trampling overall) - Reducing accessibility, especially for less mobile users

I fully support environmentally sensitive woodland management, but in this case a more targeted and considered placement of dead wood—rather than using it to block paths—might better achieve both conservation and community objectives.
