Subject: Urgent Request for Lane Repairs and Weight Restriction – The Orchard, Newport, Berkeley, Gloucestershire, GL13 9PY
I am writing to urgently request repairs to the lane at The Orchard, Newport, Berkeley (postcode GL13 9PY). Over time, the lane has become increasingly convex, resulting in a severely uneven surface.
Recently, the situation has worsened due to a rise in heavy vehicle traffic, including vehicles from both residents and Wessex Water. This has caused further damage to the lane. I would strongly encourage the implementation of a 3.5-ton weight restriction to prevent future deterioration.
The current condition of the lane means that most vehicles are scraping against the convex shape. Compounding the issue, approximately 60% of residents are elderly. This makes using the lane safely extremely challenging for both drivers and pedestrians.
As the attached photos show, my mother is unable to navigate the lane safely on her mobility scooter due to the uneven surface, and she lives in constant fear of the scooter tipping over, as shown in photography one wheel of her mobility scooter is not on the ground. Emergency vehicles and delivery services are also encountering significant difficulties.
Moving forward, I request that immediate repairs be carried out and that a weight restriction be introduced to future-proof the lane.

Thank you for reporting a pothole.
First, a safety inspector will visit the location to assess whether a repair needs to be completed and plan the work needed. Works are prioritised based on the urgency of the situation. The council aim to repair all significant potholes (more than 4cm deep and 30cm wide) within 28 days.
In some cases a temporary repair will be needed, to make the area safe, then engineers will return to make a permanent repair.

This pothole report has now been passed to the Safety Inspection Team for assessment.
A safety inspector will make an assessment of the work needed and they will consider a number of factors, including the flow of traffic and the size of the pothole.
If repair work is required, the pothole will either be classed as urgent or will be put into a planned programme of works to ensure it is repaired as efficiently as possible. We aim to complete the repair work within 28 days.
In some cases a temporary repair will be needed, to make the area safe, then engineers will return to make a permanent repair.
An update on the outcome of the safety inspection will be provided.

I am pleased to inform you this pothole has been repaired.
Gloucestershire County Council is responsible for almost 6,000km of roads and each one is routinely inspected (on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis, depending on the type of road). Issues can develop quickly in between these inspections and residents help by reporting problems online.
