Yet more damage to Grade I listed Radcot Bridge
Reported via desktop in the Bridges category anonymously at 02:07, Monday 4 May 2026
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 9394424.
Almost as soon as the previous repairs to Radcot Bridge were completed, it was immediately damaged again, and the northern bridge wall has continued to be cracked and broken by various vehicles. Metal bollards should be installed on the bank beside the section which is regularly hit; vehicles would then collide with the bollards, rather than the listed bridge structure.

Thank you for your enquiry. The repair works for the damaged wall are already scheduled to take place this year. Because the bridge is a graded listed structure, any new construction around it requires careful heritage considerations and strict regulatory approvals. Additionally, we have previously looked into installing bollards, but because the road width, doing so isn't practical and could cause further issues. However, we share your frustration regarding the recurring damage and are actively looking into alternative ways to rectify the problem and protect the bridge.

Hi OCC, I appreciate you response and I'm glad you share my frustration! Bypassing the historic bridge would be the ultimate option although given the throughput of this road vs. the A415 at Newbridge (where the need is far more pressing) it seems unlikely. Reconfiguring the approach so that vehicles did not make a sharp 90 degree turn just before passing over the bridge is also very challenging due to the streams and the proximity to the pub. Please do keep me updated.
