Dangerous pedestrians crossing road

Reported in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 20:31, Thu 20 October 2016

Sent to Tower Hamlets Borough Council 4 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 915194.

Many people are not using the pedestrian crossing to cross Preston Way at its junction with Blackwall Way by the Ibis Hotel.

Instead, many pedestrians are crossing in to the middle of the road at the junction, by crossing at the junction's southern end.

This is creating a dangerous situation for pedestrians and motorists alike and is most acute weekdays during the rush hour with commuters when the road is busiest.

The first island on the junction, when crossing east to west, may not be large enough to accommodate all of the pedestrians who wish to cross from the nearby flats en route to the Blackwall DLR station and Canary Wharf, who have to wait at three sets of lights in order to cross.

There is a barrier on one side of Preston's Road to deter pedestrians from making a risky crossing, however it does not extend that far down the road and many pedestrians walk around it.

The timing of the crossing lights is quite slow, so many pedestrians using the crossing do not wait for the green man and instead risk running across in front of traffic, which approaches quite quickly off the Aspen Way roundabout.

Please can the pedestrian crossing, railings and layout be investigated to improve the crossing for pedestrians and motorists alike?
