Open reach cables visible or close to being visible/damaged.

Reported via mobile in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 13:36, Tuesday 10 March 2026

Sent to Norfolk County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 9080863.

The high verge on this bend has been eroded by large Lorries taking at least 2 feet out of the verge and creating an extensive pothole. Open Reach FTTH cables are housed in what is left of the verge and we believe them to be in danger of being revealed and damaged. The previous copper cables are now visible and have been disturbed. This is the third or fourth time I have reported it to Open Reach and I understand they won’t do anything until the cables are damaged.. I have also reported it twice in the last 12 months to the council. One (only partial solution) would be to ask the land owner on the opposite side to trim back some trees to give the lorries more scope for turning but it needs some thought.. The last time it was reported to the council they dumped soil on the road which lasted a few days. The third photo shows Open Reach cables which have already been exposed some 100 yards or so further along this lane.We feel there should be a requirement to bury these cables deep enough to allow for the drainage grits which have now revealed them. The drainage is necessary to avoid flooding. I am concerned with Open Reach’s inability to do the right thing in the first place and the councils response - along with the lack of communication between them. It seems we would have to endure interruption to our WiFi, rather than Open Reach and the council putting their heads together to prevent damage. Wifi is absolutely essential these days for homes and businesses. Finally, the council has deemed the verge on the corner a resolved issue, but I have no way of knowing what they actually mean by that and what if anything they plan to do.

Updates

  • PLEASE HELP (if you haven't already)! If this was Lincolnshire, then Lincolnshire County Council would be providing prompt, comprehensive, and publicly-available updates to this report, right here on the FixMyStreet website, for everybody to see. Unfortunately, Norfolk County Council don't do that (and they even try to discourage people from actually using FixMyStreet)! Please SIGN THE PETITITION, to urge Norfolk County Council to start collaborating with FixMyStreet, in the same way as Lincolnshire County Council is doing (as well as other places, e.g. Oxfordshire)! PETITION WEB ADDRESS: https://c.org/ Nd7gcrX4Bk (A big thankyou to everybody who has signed the petition so far. We've already exceeded 145 signatures, but let's keep going, to really make an impact on make Norfolk County Council!)
