Pavement surface breaking up

Date of photograph: 9 March 2026 Location: Pedestrian footpath, 51.492063, -2.558883 (what3words: ///note.crush.deals) The photograph shows a significant and extensive area of footpath surface deterioration running along the boundary between the pedestrian footway and the carriageway. The surface has broken up substantially, exposing the sub-base aggregate beneath. The damage extends for a considerable length — estimated at several metres — running parallel to the kerb line. The deterioration includes large areas of displaced and fragmented tarmac, exposed loose stone and aggregate, and radiating crack lines extending into the surrounding footpath surface. The damage appears to be actively worsening, with loose debris scattered across the affected area. Immediate inspection and repair is requested under the council’s duty of care to maintain safe pedestrian infrastructure. The defect appears to meet or exceed the threshold for urgent intervention under standard highway safety inspection criteria.
