Let's all go to the flood!

Reported via desktop in the Road traffic signs category anonymously at 19:12, Wednesday 18 February 2026

Sent to Norfolk County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8950337.

Road signage errors for diversion route..

A1101 near Three Holes (Upwell), between its junctions with Mudd's Drove & Silt Road (B1094).

A recently installed automatic warning sign on the A1101 (see photos) illuminates whenever the A1101 is impassable due to flooding at Welney, (which happens a lot during wet weather).

The sign advises drivers to adopt a diversion route, by following an horizontal, hollow, black arrow on a yellow background (see photos).

However, at the next junction - A1101/Silt Road (B1094)/Halfpenny Toll Road - there is no diamond symbol on any of the directions, - (it should direct traffic down Silt Road - B1094).

Any driver assuming the absence of that diamond means they should continue straight on, will then find themselves directed to Welney where the road is flooded.

Upon seeing this, many lorry drivers seem to think they have been promoted to Captain of a ship, and have a go at navigating this water feature. Regrettably, they often discover they are still a lorry driver when they sink or become beached part way through the flood, requiring rescue.

Incidentally, there is no diamond symbol on the signs at the far end of Silt Road (junction with A1122) either.

This situation, doubtless an oversight and easily remedied, is currently making the presence of that automatic sign pointless.

Updates

  • PLEASE HELP! If this was Lincolnshire, then Lincolnshire County Council would now be providing prompt, comprehensive, and publicly-available updates to this report, right here on the FixMyStreet website, for everybody to see. Unfortunately, Norfolk County Council don't do that (and they even try to discourage people from actually using FixMyStreet)! Please SIGN THE PETITITION, to urge Norfolk County Council to start collaborating with FixMyStreet, in the same way as Lincolnshire County Council is doing! • Petition already signed. I wish you success with this worthwhile attempt at improving public services in Norfolk.

  • NCC sent me this reference number, which I think is appended to this report, but they did not say as much:

    MAIN ROAD - 4575-4815-1079-3769

  • They have corrected one of the signs but have left the others as they were.

Frankly, I cannot be bothered with these people any more, so I will mark this as fixed as this is as close as we are going to get!

It has been announced today that NCC is to be abolished. Stupidity like this are why no one will miss them.

    State changed to: Fixed
