Urgent – Extensive pothole stretch creating braking and safety hazard at traffic lights (Lower Mounts near Northampton College)

Reported via Android in the Potholes / Highway Condition category anonymously at 19:04, Sunday 15 February 2026

Sent to West Northamptonshire Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8926209.

I am reporting serious carriageway damage on Lower Mounts in Northampton, next to Northampton College and close to the traffic lights.

There are multiple potholes and heavily deteriorated road sections which together form a long stretch of deeply damaged carriageway. The defects cover a large section of the lane and cannot be easily avoided, forcing vehicles to drive over them.

This damage is creating a significant safety risk. Drivers frequently have to swerve to avoid the deepest areas, which creates unpredictable vehicle movement and danger to surrounding traffic. The problem is made worse because the damaged section sits by traffic lights where vehicles must brake. Hitting deep potholes while braking reduces stopping stability and efficiency, especially in wet conditions, increasing the risk of collisions.

The condition of the road is already causing potential tyre, suspension, and underbody damage to vehicles. In addition, pedestrians regularly cross at the lights here, and the unsafe braking conditions increase the risk to those crossing.

This location now requires urgent inspection and permanent repair as the road surface failure is extensive and presents an ongoing safety hazard to both motorists and pedestrians.

Location: Lower Mounts, Northampton (next to Northampton College, near the traffic lights)

  • Absolute joke! This is an hazard for the pedestrians walking at the traffic lights and also for the drivers as the potholes affect breaking distance and efficiency. If anybody gets injured around this location, WNC should be blamed for it.
