Light shield request

Reported via desktop in the Light Not Working category anonymously at 18:09, Tuesday 10 February 2026 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8887811.

(Reporting under “Light Not Working” as FixMyStreet doesn’t have a category for light spillage.)

I’m getting in touch about the streetlight outside 4 Cambray road, which has been causing some sideways light spillage into our windows at night. It’s something we’ve lived with for many years, but I’ve only recently learned that fitting a side‑shield or baffle is an option.

If possible, I would be very grateful if the street lighting team could assess the column and consider installing a side‑shield to block the lateral light towards the house. I understand these are used elsewhere in the borough and can resolve this type of issue without affecting lighting for the road or pavement.

Thank you very much in advance.

  • A side shield was fitted recently, which I appreciate, but unfortunately it has made no noticeable difference. The shield appears to be too small and too short to block the lateral light that shines directly into our windows.

I am including day and night photos taken from our bedroom which show the current shield and the ongoing glare.

Would it be possible for the street lighting team to reassess the column and consider fitting a wider and taller side shield (or full height side screen), as used elsewhere in the borough for similar situations? Changing the angle alone will not resolve the issue, as the lantern emits sideways spill.

We have lived with this for many years and would be very grateful if a more effective shield could be installed.

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

  • A contractor visited on 23 June and said he had been instructed to replace the lantern with one that is less bright. I explained, and showed photographs, that the issue is not brightness but sideways light spillage, and that the shield fitted in April is too small and too short to block the lateral light entering our windows.

Replacing the lantern will not resolve this, as the problem is the side‑spill, not the overall output.

At this stage, it would be very helpful to have a direct conversation with someone from the Street Lighting team so we can look at the practical options together. I’m very happy to discuss different approaches — whether that’s a larger or full‑height shield, a different type of baffle, or any other solution the team may recommend. If a custom shield is required, I’m open to discussing how that might work.

This issue has been ongoing for many months, so a brief dialogue would help ensure that everyone is aligned on the best plan forward.

    Thank you.
