Dangerous Muddy and Poorly Lit Footpath Near David Lloyd Hampton

Reported via mobile in the Pavements/footpaths category anonymously at 00:17, Friday 6 February 2026

Sent to Richmond upon Thames Borough Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8849411.

The pathway alongside the grass near David Lloyd Hampton (right-hand side) is consistently muddy and slippery, especially after rain, and is poorly lit, making it very difficult to see hazards and creating a serious risk of slips, trips, and falls.

Updates

  • Hi. For info. This footpath is on private land, so the Council has no remit (or budget) to maintain it. The volunteers at Hampton Heath Friends do take an interest, and we do what we can to try and drain the puddles which form each year, but we have no funding for this either. Please do get in touch for more info, and I'll ask the fabulous volunteer team to look into what can be done over the weekend. hamptonheathfriends@outlook.com

  • Hello,

Thank you for the improvements recently made to reduce muddy areas on Hampton Heath. I really appreciate the work done.

However, I’ve noticed that some areas of the paths have become muddy again. This is making them slippery and difficult to use for walkers, dog owners, and other visitors.

Would it be possible to consider more long-term measures, such as improved drainage, gravel, or wood chip coverage, to help prevent the mud from recurring?

Thanks again for your time and attention.

    Best regards, David

  • Hi Hampton Heath Friends have been looking for sources of funding for this path for several years. Because it is not publicly owned, the funding orgs we have approached have said the onus is on the site's leaseholder (David Lloyd). However, because it is part of the London Loop, we continue to hope there are ways to fund improvements to the path. We have discussed the path with Councillors, and they understand its importance, but are also unable to fund work in the short term, for the same reasons. We have mentioned the condition of the path to David Lloyd, and will do so again - with an offer of our volunteers doing repairs as best we can, but we have no funds for materials or tool hire. Really, it needs more comprehensive resurfacing - but that would require a groundwork contractor and significant budget. Any work we do, as volunteers would be limited to sweeping away mud, or digging drainage swales alongside the paths - unless we can get funds to pay for materials for pothole repairs. We will carry out whatever limited work we can do (i.e. subject to funding) in late spring or early summer, subject to agreement from David Lloyd. The one action you could take is to get in touch with both David Lloyd and/or Ward councillors... though we have already met with cllrs, additional voices from the community will add to the pressure for improvements, especially in an election year.
