6 inch deep portal safety report - urgent
Reported via mobile in the Pothole in a road category by Kerry Bromhall at 20:20, Wednesday using FixMyStreet Pro
Sent to Shropshire Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 14198339.
Description of Defect: A pothole is present on the carriageway measuring approximately 50cm x 30cm, with a depth of around 6 inches at its deepest point. The defect is substantial and has deteriorated to a level that presents a significant hazard to road users.
Road Usage and Risk Factors: This road is a busy thoroughfare used daily by motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, and runners. Due to frequent rainfall, the pothole regularly fills with water, concealing its depth and edges. This significantly increases the danger, as road users are unable to accurately assess the hazard before encountering it.
Risk to Vehicles: Should a vehicle pass over the pothole, there is a high likelihood of substantial damage, including damage to tyres, wheels, and suspension components. This would result in financial loss and inconvenience to the driver.
Risk to Cyclists and Pedestrians: Of greater concern is the risk posed to cyclists. If a cyclist were to encounter this pothole, particularly when obscured by water, it is highly likely they would be thrown from the bicycle, potentially resulting in serious injury. The size and depth of the pothole make it especially dangerous for two-wheeled road users.
Safeguarding Children: This route is used daily by school children cycling into Shifnal, particularly those whose parents do not drive. These children rely on this road for safe access to education. Their safety must be treated as a priority, and the current condition of the carriageway presents an unacceptable risk of serious harm.
Conclusion and Request: Given the size, depth, and location of this pothole, along with the high volume and variety of road users, urgent inspection and repair is requested. Prompt action would significantly reduce the risk of injury, vehicle damage, and potential liability.
