XL potholes

Reported via mobile in the Pothole category anonymously at 19:18, Tuesday 20 January 2026

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8731039.

The road surface at this location is in an extremely poor and hazardous condition, posing a serious safety risk to all road users. There are multiple extra-large potholes, deep cracks, and significant uneven bumps that can easily result in vehicle damage, loss of control, and potentially severe accidents, particularly for cyclists and motorcyclists. Under Section 41 of the Highways Act 1980, the highway authority has a statutory duty to maintain roads maintainable at public expense and ensure they are free from danger. If a defect causes injury or damage, and it can be shown it existed and was dangerous, the council may be held legally liable. The authority can defend against liability only if it can prove it took all reasonable steps to prevent or repair the defect promptly under Section 58 of the same Act. Given the severity and size of these defects, unless a documented inspection, prioritization, and repair schedule is already in place, this situation may well constitute a breach of legal duty.
