Highways Verge Trees Causing Structural Heave to Private Driveway and Garage Slab

Reported via desktop anonymously at 14:00, Sunday 18 January 2026 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to West Northamptonshire Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8713586.

I am reporting damage believed to be caused by mature roadside verge trees under the responsibility of the Highway Authority.

Several mature alder trees (approximately 16–18 metres in height) are located on the highway verge adjacent to my property, within approximately 3 metres of the boundary. Over time, significant structural movement has developed, including: • Progressive cracking and heave to the tarmac driveway • Cracking and displacement of the concrete garage floor slab • Associated cracking to external brickwork at low level

Photographs are attached showing: • The affected driveway surface • Cracking to the garage floor slab • Cracking to external brickwork • The proximity, size, and location of the roadside verge trees

Given the species, size, and proximity of the trees, and the nature of the damage observed, this appears consistent with root-related ground movement.

I request: • Inspection by the Highways Tree Officer / Arboricultural team • Assessment of the verge trees’ root systems in relation to the damage • Confirmation of proposed remedial action to prevent further movement and damage

This report is submitted to formally notify the Highway Authority of ongoing damage potentially arising from highway-managed trees.
