Misleading road marking - accident risk. Railway Rd, near Lawn Boy, Downham Market
Reported in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 17:27, Mon 1 August 2016
Sent to Norfolk County Council 3 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 870603.
Please refer to photos and visit the location to see for yourself. As you approach the mini roundabout near Lawn Boy, from the direction of the new houses, (with Lawn Boy on your right), the ghost island pushes you over to the left (see photos). Traffic wishing to turn RIGHT, toward the town centre is thus positioned as if it is turning LEFT, creating the impression for traffic heading for the town centre from the direction of the railway station that it will not have to give way to roundabout traffic. Very often, the traffic approaching the roundabout form the new houses either does not indicate its intention to turn right, of has its indicators hidden by the relative angles of the approaching cars, compounding the problem. The road from the new houses needs to have 2 lanes marked at the roundabout so it is obvious which way that traffic intends turning. I have witnessed a number of 'near misses' at this location because of this poor road marking. Please mark it more clearly before an accident occurs as a result of the misdirection that exists now.

08 08 16. I phoned NCC's call centre about the above response. Apparently, whomever originally responded had a choice of 'standard replies' and chose the 'cannot find it' one, which was not correct. NCC told me that their system shows the comment in the reply (above), but also shows a comment saying:
'Will check area and programme to refresh lining in the area'
I have pointed out that it does not just need refreshing but actually need remarking, correctly.
NCC call centre chap was very helpful but said he has no way of emailing me with this later info and no way of seeing the photos attached to the original report, (though he thinks they probably reached the highways dept… I am not so confident!). He has asked highways to contact me direct… we will se if they actually do!
NCC's IT system seems pretty unhelpful to its own staff, never mind the tax-paying public!
Updated complaint ref is 0100673.
Hope no one has an accident while NCC is prevaricating over this matter.

29 08 16. Not so much as a phone call or an email from NCC Highways, never mode actually marking the junction correctly!

06 09 16. I am still waiting for the phone call (or even an email) that was 'promised' by NCC's call centre.

Spoke to supervisor/manager in NCC cll centre. He was full of apologies that there had been no returned call but said he did not know why and could not identify to whom the request had been made. After a long and utter fruitless phone call he said he would ask them again to call, but that it was, in practice, up to the depot whether they called or not and he could do no more than that.

26 09 16. So much for the 'promises' made by NCC. No phone call from them at all. The markings remain unaltered, and near-misses continue to happen at this location.

Still nothing form NCC so called them again.
Call centre will request AGAIN that highways call to discuss this dangerous situation. I will not hold my breath though, as they clearly do not care.

Fewer than 24 hours after speaking to the NCC call centre I had this reply: ==== We are pleased to advise that your request ENQ-0159179 has been updated.
Council Service: Highways Maintenance: Highway Damage (excluding potholes) Previous Status: We are investigating the problem. New Status: We could not find the problem and so have not taken any action at this time. ====
Can you believe such ineptitude?

No change. No interest shown by NCC in this situation and the danger it presents to road users. They could not even be bothered to return my call even though their call centre promised I would hear from highways within a few days.

21 11 16. I have had no communication from NCC about this despite their promises. They have shown no interest in the situation nor in the danger it poses to road users. Basically, they are just ignoring it.

20.12.16. No change. It seems NCC is very happy to ignore this situation despite it causing regular near misses, and they never did keep their 'promise' to call me back about this danger. Disinterested and dishonest.

06 06 17. Still no change, despite an accident here not long ago with was caused in part by the poor marking of the road, and the odd angles at which they set cars as they approach the roundabout.

01 08 17.
Exactly one year later, absolutely no interest shown by NCC is addressing this situation despite almost daily 'near misses'.
To anyone who drives in they area, PLEASE be really careful at this awful roundabout. It really is an accident waiting to happen, and is getting worse as more and more houses are built and occupied in the area of Daisy Lane.

Still nothing has been done. Saw another near miss today at about lunchtime, this time with a lorry and a car. Someone is going to be injured in an accident here before long.
