  • At approximately 7:00am on Saturday 17 January, I struck a pothhole that I was unable to avoid due to oncoming traffic and low light conditions. As a result, my front right tyre burst and there is likely damage to the alloy wheel, which is currently awaiting inspection by my garage.

I was able to pull over safely and change the wheel, and later returned to the location to take photographs, as I live in Culworth. I will be submitting a claim for the full costs associated with the damage caused.

  • At approximately 10pm Saturday 24th, I struck a pothole in this same location. I couldn't avoid due to the oncoming traffic. As a result my tyre has burst and my alloy buckled. I live in Thorpe Mandeville and due to HS2 this is my main route out of the village. I will be submitting a claim with the associated costs.

  • Defect classification challenge – should be Category 1 (Priority 1)

In accordance with the West Northamptonshire Council Highways Inspection Manual and the principles of the UK Well-Managed Highway Infrastructure Code of Practice, this defect meets the criteria for a Category 1 (Priority 1) repair, not Category 2.

The defect consists of a significant carriageway pothole with exposed structural layers, located within the running lane. As shown in the attached photographs, the defect: • Exceeds 40mm in depth (measured and evidenced) • Has steep, near-vertical edges and broken asphalt • Is water-filled, obscuring depth and shape • Shows active deterioration, with loose material and edge collapse • Is positioned where vehicles are forced to track, increasing strike risk

Under the Inspection Manual, a Category 1 defect is defined as one that presents an immediate or imminent risk to highway users and requires urgent action. The characteristics above meet this definition due to: • Immediate risk of vehicle damage, loss of control, or personal injury • Increased danger to cyclists and motorcyclists • The masking effect of standing water, preventing users from identifying the hazard in time • Evidence of structural failure, not superficial surface wear

The defect cannot reasonably be described as stable or non-urgent. Leaving this defect for a programmed repair period (Category 2) does not adequately manage the risk and is inconsistent with the Council’s duty under Section 41 of the Highways Act 1980 to maintain the highway in a safe condition.

Requested action: Re-inspect and re-classify this defect as Category 1 (Priority 1) and carry out immediate make-safe or permanent repair.

  • Providing additional photos to demonstrate the need for urgent action. Since the HS2 diversion came into effect, this road has been carrying a substantially higher volume of traffic. The current condition now presents a clear risk of collision, vehicle damage, or serious injury, and prompt remediation is required.

  • I see that this was originally repoted 16th Jan, we also hit it on our way home on 21st. It was raining and the pothole was full of water so not visible. This resulted in an unrepairable puncture to near side front wheel. This is paticularly annoying as I had already purchased 2 brand new front tyres just before Xmas. (I will be putting in a claim.) This is a vital route during all the HS2 road closures and diversions and suprising that this road was not inspected and repaired before these closures, Many routes in this area are in a poor state of repair because of additional and heavy HS2 traffic. I also see that HS2 are planning to close this road at Lower Thorpe for Viaduct work from 5th Feb til 24th April. This particular pothole obviously need urgent attention, but during the closure it would be a good idea to inspect and repair the whole of the lane as there are many difficult to avoid potholes throughout (between Culworth abd Thorpe), getting worse by the day.
