Programming on traffic lights

Reported via mobile in the Traffic Lights (permanent only) category anonymously at 16:36, Monday 12 January 2026 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8674693.

You closed my previous report on this after you replied, so I could not reply to it and I therefore need to start a new one.

You say the lights are programmed to rest on red when there is no traffic approaching. Why?

Why not leave the main Sandford Road lights on green, as they were programmed to do before, with them only changing to red when traffic comes out of Armstrong Road.

The sensors do not always detect oncoming traffic, especially if you are cycling, so they don't always change. This leaves cars idling, which is not good for the environment. I know as I go through them every day.

As you have not provided any explanation it seems like the change was unnecessary and just causes delay.

Updates

  • Thank you for your report, we are now investigating this issue and an update will be posted as soon as possible.

    State changed to: Investigating

  • Thank you for your report. As the site is located outside a hospital and is in a 20mph zone, the controller has been programmed to revert to all red after a preset period when no demands or extensions are recorded. The signals then change to red/amber on the appropriate phase when a demand is received. An Engineer has visited site and checked the operation of the signals and found the delay timer had reverted to its original setting. The timer has been reset, and the Engineer fully tested the sites operation, observing all approaches being called by a single cycle approaching the signals. We will continue to monitor the site.

    State changed to: Fixed
