Ongoing Issue

Reported via desktop in the The drain is blocked category by Paul Workman at 11:47, Sunday 11 January 2026 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Gloucestershire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8665505.

Last week after heavy rain I was forced off the road whilst heading towards Tewkesbury by a car that had lost control hitting a flood on the opposdite side of the road - on investigation I discovered it was caused by pumped water from a resident on the North side of the road in Newtown whos house was in iminent danger of flooding. I chatted with him and he had no other choice. It seems Severen Trent have backfilled a culvert which in their wisdom deemed as redundant, Now there is a scenario of which I am sure you are aware of involving Highways and Severn Trent pointing fingers at each other over who is responsible. Surely this should be fixed in the first instance and then disputed afterwards out of both a duty of care and for the sake of that good old forgotten giftcalled common sense. The culvert needs reinstating and meanwhile traffic lights provided when pumping is in progress. This is every time it rains. The resident is clearly contributing to both bodies and it would seem fair that between them they get on with it before there is a serious incident. Matters such as these should not be cost sensitive.they need addressing regardless of expense

Updates

  • Thank you for reporting a drainage or flooding issue.

We will investigate the issue. If additional clearance work is needed, the local highways team will prioritise the most urgent reports. Where possible, maintenance tasks will be grouped together in a schedule for efficiency.

Sometimes during periods of heavy rain, even a clear gully can be overwhelmed. Usually the water will drain away within an hour.

Every gully or drain the county council is responsible for is cleared at least once each year. Some drains in problem areas are cleared more frequently. You can find out more, including the gully emptying schedule on our website by visiting www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/highways/roads/road-maintenance

If your property is at risk of flooding please see the Flood Guide for advice and support by visiting www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/planning-and-environment/flood-risk-management/flooding-information/flood-guide

If you are driving: please never ignore road closures or enter flood water. This could put you or others in danger and invalidate your insurance.

We will provide updates about this report. Thank you again for taking the time to report this issue.
