Perimeter railing - Hoblingwell/Petersham Drive

Reported via mobile in the Park Repairs category by Ralph Ambrose at 12:42, Friday 9 January 2026

Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8656501.

A pole from the perimeter railing was found opposite number 27 Petersham Drive. This seems to have come from opposite number 19 Petersham Drive where a pole was missing. (Please see attached photo showing gap.)

This pole has been replaced in the posts however it is not central so is loose and not secure.

Many of the poles in the vicinity do not abut centrally within the posts and so are not secure and are easily removed.

Tracks were found through the gap opposite 19 Petersham Drive so it appears that this pole was deliberately removed for access with a quad bike. (Please see attached photo showing tracks.)

Please could the railing in this area be properly secured?

  • The poles were again removed last Thursday (2026-01-22) between approximately 10:30 and 12:30. One was deposited further up the road. These were returned and reinserted into their posts. However they remain loose.

Please could this railing be properly secured?

  • Thank you for the report, quotes for the required works have been gathered and currently being assessed in relation to priorities across the Bromley Estate.

  • For clarity: Report 8559609 (https://www.fixmystreet.com/ report/ 8559609) and report 8656501 (https://www.fixmystreet.com/ report/ 8656501) refer to separate loose railing sections at different locations along the same perimeter railing (opposite 29 Petersham Drive and opposite 19 Petersham Drive respectively). They are not duplicates and should not be treated as such.

Each defect requires individual inspection and assessment. However, they should also be considered collectively, as they appear to arise from a common underlying design and installation issue.

The railing system comprises capped hollow 4-inch square posts with openings on each side to receive the railing sections. The sections are not mechanically connected; they are simply butted together within the posts. Their integrity therefore depends entirely on precise central positioning within the posts.

In multiple locations, the railing sections are not centrally abutted. Given the very fine tolerances, even minor displacement reduces stability and increases the likelihood of sections becoming loose. This risk is exacerbated by local clay subsoil conditions, which are susceptible to moisture-related ground movement and may contribute to progressive displacement over time.

I respectfully request that both reports remain open and are inspected on site, and that the defects are assessed both individually (as discrete loose sections) and collectively (in terms of the overall design vulnerability of the railing system).

    With many thanks.

  • Thank you for your enquiry. Our contractor has attended site to replace the missing poles and have installed straight locking connections to ensure that any poles cannot be pushed through the posts. The Council is in the process of arranging a site meeting to reinspect the fence in its entirety and address any additional hotspot areas using the revised joint connections where feasible.
