Black/sheet ice along long stretch of Downs rd

Reported via mobile in the Ice/Snow category anonymously at 18:36, Wednesday 7 January 2026 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8643543.

A number of cars have already spun and lost control on black/sheet ice on this stretch of road and hill which is currently treacherous. It's a main road accessing the village, as well as a bus route and the main route to the village school. It needs to be addressed as a matter or urgency before a serious accident occurs. It's clearly not feasible for individuals to be expected to fix this given the expanse of the road. The ice on the pathways also needs addressing, especially with the number of individuals using them to access, the lanes, church and school. As a recurring issue it would make sense for this road be added to those to be gritted both now and in future.

  • Thank you for your report. The Oxfordshire County Council typically salts roads between November 1st and March 31st, although this period may be extended if weather conditions necessitate it. Our commitment is to maintain major roads free from ice, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring smooth traffic flow. Precautionary salting, also known as “gritting,” plays a crucial role in achieving this goal.
For information on specific Oxfordshire routes that are routinely salted during the winter, you can visit the One Network website and select “gritting routes” under driver information.
All new requests for salt bins are assessed by Oxfordshire County Council. If you’re interested in obtaining a salt bin, you can purchase one through your town or parish council. Before making a request, it’s advisable to contact them first.
