A qualified Highways Inspector has assessed the location and we can confirm that in accordance with the WNC Highways Inspection Manual, the defect meets the requirement for a Priority 4 repair. We will schedule a repair to be completed within 26 weeks. Our current average response time for a Priority 4 repair is 59 days.

The road base is now exposed and the holes are now deeper causing traffic to swing out into oncoming traffic.

These potholes are still present outside the petrol station. Since there are now 4 way temporary lights (with no work taking place) you have no choice but to stop to slowly drive over the potholes as you can't go on the opposite side. Can the council actually fix these roads before a serious accident happens.

I understand that this may not reflect your personal view; however, from an organisational standpoint, this position is extremely concerning.
Public reports associated with this defect clearly describe vehicles swerving to avoid it, and at least one report refers to a near head-on collision. These are not minor inconveniences but indicators of a serious and ongoing safety risk to road users.
Given that the investigation outcome states “Defect Found” and acknowledges that a repair is required, it is difficult to reconcile this with the assertion that the issue is not safety-critical enough to warrant timely action. A defect that causes drivers to take evasive action at speed inherently increases the risk of collision, injury, or worse.
I am unclear how this situation does not meet the threshold of a high-risk defect under the Highway Inspection Manual. If defects that force vehicles to swerve and nearly result in head-on collisions are not prioritised, it raises serious questions about how safety risk is being assessed and managed.
Until the repair is completed, the risk remains present and foreseeable. I trust this matter will be reviewed with the seriousness it warrants.

Thank you for your response. However, I remain extremely concerned about the current condition of the road, particularly the potholes at the entrance to the petrol station.
These potholes present a clear safety risk. Vehicles are forced to slow suddenly, swerve, or cross into other lanes to avoid damage, increasing the likelihood of accidents. They also pose a serious hazard to cyclists and motorcyclists, and create a risk of vehicle damage for all road users. Given the high volume of traffic entering and exiting the petrol station, this area should be treated as a priority.
In addition, there have been multiple repairs carried out in this area over time that have not met an acceptable standard. These repairs have deteriorated quickly and have failed to provide a lasting solution. As a result, the road surface continues to worsen, which suggests that previous work has not lived up to reasonable expectations for a safe and well-maintained road.
While I understand that resources must be prioritised, the ongoing poor condition of this road and the failure of previous repairs demonstrate that the current approach is not effective. Leaving this issue unresolved puts road users at risk and is not acceptable.
I ask that this matter is reviewed urgently and that proper, long-lasting repairs are carried out please leave a link to your “standards” as I can’t seem to find it to assess the situation.

I would like to highlight that road workers were carrying out repairs less than a mile away from these potholes, yet this section was not addressed at the same time. This raises concerns about planning and efficiency. Could you please explain why these obvious defects were overlooked? recent repairs in the area have proven inadequate and are already unfit for regular vehicle use.

A lorry was driving on the wrong side of the road directly towards me at this location. This created a very dangerous situation and posed a serious risk of a collision. The road layout does not support vehicles using the wrong side, and this behaviour could easily cause an accident involving oncoming traffic or pedestrians. This is a serious safety issue, and lack of budget must not be used as an excuse for failing to address or mitigate the danger. Please investigate and take action to prevent this from happening again.

While I note that a works order has been raised, I am very concerned about the proposed completion date of 16/06/26.
This issue is not a minor defect. It has already been reported by multiple members of the public as dangerous, and there have now been recent head-on collisions at this location. This indicates the defect presents an active and immediate safety risk to road users.
Given that your own guidance states that the most safety critical defects are prioritised, I am struggling to understand how a defect associated with live traffic incidents has been scheduled so far into the future.
Given the reported collisions and the ongoing risk, I believe this matter now warrants escalation beyond standard scheduling.
A repair timeline extending into 2026 does not reflect the seriousness of a situation where road users are already being harmed.
I would therefore request:
• That this case is urgently reassessed under the Highway Inspection Manual criteria • That consideration is given to raising the priority level • That interim safety measures are reviewed to reduce the immediate risk
Please confirm whether this location will now be escalated in light of the safety concerns raised.

The response provided is not acceptable. Since the original report, the potholes have significantly deteriorated and have at least doubled in size. This represents a clear worsening of the situation, not an improvement or resolution.
The current condition of the road poses an increased risk to vehicles and road users, and it is disappointing that this escalation has not been properly acknowledged or addressed. I urge the council to reassess the site as a matter of urgency and take appropriate action to repair the damage before it worsens further.
