I am writing to formally raise a complaint regarding the extremely dangerous and unacceptable road conditions on Birdlip Hill, which caused significant damage to our vehicle yesterday. While travelling down Birdlip Hill, my partner and I encountered numerous, extremely large potholes that appeared to have been left unfilled—presumably following recent roadworks. With a vehicle approaching in the opposite lane, my partner had no choice but to drive through one of these potholes to avoid a collision. Our one-year-old child was also in the car at the time. The impact caused immediate and severe damage to the wheel, and by the time we reached the bottom of the hill the tyre had been completely destroyed (see attached photos). When we pulled over, we found three other vehicles in the same situation, all with damaged tyres and waiting for assistance after hitting the same potholes. As a result, we have already had to pay over £100 to repair the damage—an unexpected and significant expense that we cannot afford. The situation was distressing, dangerous, and entirely avoidable had the road been properly maintained or warnings put in place. I am requesting: An urgent investigation into the state of Birdlip Hill and the roadworks carried out in the area. Confirmation of what immediate action will be taken to prevent further incidents. Information on how we can submit a claim for reimbursement of the repair costs caused directly by this highway defect. I look forward to your prompt response, as this incident has caused us considerable financial and emotional stress.
Updates

Thank you for reporting a pothole.
First, a safety inspector will visit the location to assess whether a repair needs to be completed and plan the work needed. Works are prioritised based on the urgency of the situation. The council aim to repair all significant potholes (more than 4cm deep and 30cm wide) within 28 days.
In some cases a temporary repair will be needed, to make the area safe, then engineers will return to make a permanent repair.
We will provide updates about this report.
