Unpermitted roadworks problem

Reported in the Unpermitted roadworks category by Gloucestershire County Council at 11:24, Thu 20 November 2025

FixMyStreet ref: 8470917.

URGENT Failure of A435 Closure Diversion
Ongoing issue resulting from the closure of the A435 near Bishops Cleeve, commenced on 17/11/25.The official diversion route, is impractical due to the significant time added to journeys. Consequently, a large volume of non-local traffic, including cars and commercial vehicles, is ignoring the official route and using residential roads as a "rat run"
Impact on Residents and the Local Environment
The surge in traffic volume through these typically quiet residential streets is causing significant negative impacts on residents:Noise Pollution: The constant, heavy flow of traffic, especially during peak hours, is generating unacceptable levels of noise, severely impacting the quality of life for residents
Air Quality:The increase in vehicle emissions is concentrated within a residential area, raising concerns about local air quality and public health
Road Safety:The speed and volume of through-traffic on roads not designed for it create a dangerous environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and especially children
Requested Action (Immediate Mitigation)
I urge the Highways department to acknowledge the failure of the current traffic management plan and take immediate action to mitigate the problems for residents:
Re-evaluate Signage:Deploy clearer, more visible, and mandatory signage to enforce the official diversion and discourage non-local access to Bishops Cleeve/Gotherington
Temporary Enforcement:Implement temporary traffic calming measures (e.g., temporary speed restrictions or chicanes) on the residential roads being used as a rat run
"Access Only" Restriction:Consider installing temporary "No Through Traffic" or "Access Only for Residents" signage on the affected routes to deter opportunistic drivers
