No visibility exiting Meadow Court
Reported via desktop in the Road Markings category by Jess Hawthorn at 09:56, Wednesday 15 October 2025
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 6 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 8297518.
There is no safe visibility to exit Meadow Court (opposite Blunt Rabbit barbers) onto High Street. On the right hand side the parked cars completely block view up to the roundabout, and it's impossible to see oncoming traffic without edging into the middle of the road. And on the left the buses completely block visibility of oncoming traffic, and often stop to collect passengers whilst sitting in the marked keep clear area. This issue is the worst around rush hour when people are leaving the offices, which is when we all need to exit.
Turning left is often congested traffic up to the traffic lights so turning right is the best option for most people to get home, however it is just not safe to do so without moving into the middle of the road, letting an oncoming driver from the left to let you out, but then you have to get to the other side of the road with no visibility or ability to be seen from oncoming traffic from the other direction. I think the keep clear area really needs to be extended to allow for safe exit of Meadow Court.

Thank you for your report. In locations like this where there is a need to provide parking and facilities for public transport, and where space is at a premium, some compromises are often needed. Measures are in place to keep the access clear as far as possible and it would be expected that drivers both exiting the Court and those on the High Street exercise due caution in the vicinity. With a reduced speed limit and slow moving traffic it would not be unreasonable to expect a driver to “edge out” of the access in order to gain a better view of oncoming vehicles.
"Edging out of a junction" refers to
the technique of slowly moving forward from a minor road to a major one to improve visibility, especially when your view is obstructed. It involves using the clutch to creep forward while looking for a safe gap in traffic, and stopping if you see approaching vehicles, before proceeding when it's completely safe. This is also known as the "creep and peep" technique and is a way to emerge safely from a closed or obstructed junction.
How to edge out of a junction
• Prepare: Approach the junction slowly and select first gear. Make sure you have a clear view of the road you are emerging onto by looking left and right.
• Creep forward: If your view is obstructed, gently ease the clutch and apply a little gas to move the car forward. This is the "creep" part.
• Peep: As you creep forward, continue to look for a safe gap in traffic. This is the "peep" part.
• Stop if necessary: If you see vehicles approaching too quickly to merge safely, stop the car before you fully enter their path.
• Proceed when safe: Once a safe opportunity arises, fully move out onto the main road.
• Check mirrors: After you have emerged, check your mirrors to establish your new position relative to other traffic.
When and why to use it
• Obstructed views: This technique is essential when parked cars, hedges, or other obstructions block your view of oncoming traffic.
• Waiting for a gap: It's a way to get a better vantage point without completely stopping, which can be helpful when traffic is heavy.
• Closed junctions: At closed junctions, where you can't see around corners, "edging out" allows you to inch forward until you can see the road clearly.
