The road surface in Old Orchard Street, BA1 1JU is noticeably moving. This ongoing distortion is extremely worrying to the residents.
Rainwater no longer reaches the drains but collects in puddles. However, the greater concern is the real danger of collapse of the street which was not designed to bear the weight of the heavier vehicles that currently use it.
The HGV’s often park half on the pavement which is causing loose and uneven paving making trip hazards and often awkward to use one’s front door.
I would point out that there are vaults underneath the street that were designed and built to bear the weight of much lighter vehicles. It should be treated as a road which is particularly weak and in need of repair. I understand that it is your policy to take out a weight restriction order where it is necessary to protect roads, structures and areas from the effects of large and heavy vehicles. This is absolutely the case in this street and HGV’s should not be allowed access. A structural weight restriction of 3.5 tonnes should be imposed.
Old Orchard Street has important heritage value that is being damaged by the heavy vehicles. It is one of the few remaining cobbled streets in the city and one that deserves to be preserved. The vaults beneath the street are also of historic importance and a collapse would undoubtedly cause damage to the surrounding listed buildings.

I am a resident of this street since 2017. The condition of this historic street has continued to deteriorate. It is visibly sinking which is due to the heavy lorries that deliver every day to the back of the Abbey Hotel. There are many vaults below the street including ours that have visible damage. Without question there will be a collapse of pavement causing serious damage to persons and property. Large, lorries should be restricted to conducting deliveries from Bog Island as done by other businesses. In addition to the physical damage, these lorries spend considerable time parked on the street and block passage for emergency vehicles. We are pensioners and the thought of these lorries causing delays to emergency vehicles is unacceptable. There are no double yellow lines on the cobbles and the lorries would ignore them in any event. I have raised this issue previously but was rather ignored. A proper review of the seriousness of this issue is required.
