I’m writing to you to bring to your attention the dangers of the new balloon style pedestrian and cycle sign that has been placed on the bollards on the cycle path at the end of Oliver Road. They have significantly narrowed the distance between the bollards and while cycling up to work from Redbridge park and ride (which I do every day) the narrowing of the distance and the low sun meant my vision was temporarily blinded caused me to clip the sign with the very edge of my handlebars. I was thrown from bike and took the full impact initially on my shoulder and then my head. I was taken to the JR hospital where I was diagnosed with a head of humerus fracture and a mild concussion (thank goodness for cycle helmets). Two other fabulous cycling commuters helped me until I was taken to hospital and many others stopped to offer help too. However, everyone commented on how much more narrow the space has become and that they thought the size of the sign could be reduced. I understand the need for clear signage there but think the diameter of the sign could be reduced to prevent any further accidents. I’m now looking at potentially 6-8 weeks healing time providing that no surgical intervention is required. Hopefully by the time I’m able to cycle to work again, this signage will have been improved.

Thankyou for bringing this to our attention regarding the spacing of the bollards at this location. The bollard arrangement will be adjusted accordingly as part of the Oxford City Bollard Maintenance Programme 2025/26 with limited funding. May I be permitted to wish you a full recovery.
