Failing Manhole Cover

Reported via desktop in the Manhole category anonymously at 11:23, Mon 8 September 2025

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8135340.

The cover is on the Westbound side of the A417about 250 metres before the Ardington turn. The cover is failing and I have noticed it's continuing deterioration over the last few months to the extent that regular isers of this road actually swerve to avoid driving over it. As vehicles, and especially heavy lorries, continue to drive over it the cover will continue to bend and sag until it fails. Upon failure, which really could be quite soon in the future, the resultant large opening will inevitably cause a serious traffic accident that could even be fatal. Too dangerous to stop and photograph as a busy road so two street view photos attached, one from 2008 and one from 2023. Even the one taken 2 years ago shows damage which is now much much worse.

  • I hit this last week while in queueing traffic, even at 20mph it sent a sharp shudder through the car. Luckily no damage this time, but it is only a matter of time before something or someone is damaged.

  • Reporting the same as above, it’s getting worse. The photos don’t show how bad it’s got but difficult to take photos on such a busy fast road. It needs fixing.

  • This manhole cover will collapse soon and a car will get seriously damaged. To avoid it you are required to veer right to oncoming traffic, or left and risk striking the hidden manhole cover on the verge which would wreck a cars wheels. This must be dealt with.
