Reported via mobile by Taruna Tombling at 18:05, Wed 3 September 2025

Sent to West Northamptonshire Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8115188.

Road to retail park and back narrows with limited visibility. Mirrors are needed. Cars drive up and down at speed putting pedestrians at risk. Speed limit needs to be reduced at enforced. The area is very busy doing holidays and rush hours. Buses struggling to get past.

Updates

  • Thank you for your enquiry, concerning highway safety issues at the narrowing (priority feature) between Weston Mill Lane and Fairground Way.

Firstly, we can of course understand the distress caused to the community following the recent incidents involving speeding drivers and appreciate the apprehension that is felt with passing motorists because of the high traffic volumes.

Due to the inherent layout of this narrow section of carriageway (which was once only open to buses), it may be difficult to apply engineering solutions that would resolve these issues. Given the already reduced road width and limited forward visibility, motorists are generally negotiating this priority feature at relatively low speeds, but on occasions may try to speed through if they believe the road is clear or have to reverse to allow a vehicle through. Furthermore, with the lack of available road space, improving pedestrian provisions would not be possible to address the issues you have described. Consequently, there may be a need for a review of the area to determine whether alternative restrictive measures should be considered.

In the first instance, it may be prudent to contact Northampton Town Council or your local Councillor to seek their support for a review of the current usage who will make further representations to Highways on your behalf.

Of interest to you - the Highway Code Rule 153 refers to usage of ‘rights of way / priorities’ for this type of feature, all information relating to this can be found on the following link: Highway Code Rule 153 - Highway Code. In relation to pedestrian vulnerability and poor driving behaviour, it may be that some instances are deemed to be dangerous and if captured on video/camera/dashcam, these can be reported to the Northamptonshire Police as part of their ‘Operation Snap’ campaign. The following link explains how members of the public can report driving offences in the West Northamptonshire area by filling out a form and uploading video evidence they have captured: Northamptonshire Police Secure Form (northants.police.uk)

I trust you find the above information helpful
