Subject: Urgent Request for Road Safety and Traffic Calming Measures
Dear [Council/Highways Officer/Local Authority],
I am writing to raise serious concerns regarding the excessive speed of vehicles on [Road Name]. Despite the 30mph speed limit, the average speed of traffic regularly exceeds 40mph. This is causing significant safety risks as well as structural concerns, with larger vehicles passing at speed often causing our home to shake and vibrate.
The existing traffic calming measures are ineffective. They are obscured by debris and vegetation, making them barely visible, and even when clear, they are largely ignored by drivers.
This is a built-up residential area with over 70 houses, many of which are family homes with young children. Since moving here in May 2025, we have witnessed two cats killed on this short stretch of road within two weeks of each other, one of which was our much-loved pet. It is highly likely she would have survived had the vehicle been driving within the legal speed limit.
With a further 165 homes proposed for development in the area, the volume of traffic is set to increase significantly, which will only heighten the risks. Without urgent intervention, it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs.
We therefore request that the council urgently reviews and upgrades the traffic calming measures in place, ensuring they are visible, effective, and sufficient to reduce vehicle speeds to the legal 30mph limit. Possible measures could include speed cameras, speed indicator signs, or additional physical calming features.
The safety and wellbeing of residents, including children and pets, must be a priority. I strongly urge you to take immediate action before more lives are affected.
Yours sincerely, Gemma Everson
