Shaggy Bracket fungus threatening public tree

Reported via mobile in the Parks & Green Spaces category by Richard Comaish at 17:05, Mon 11 August 2025

Sent to Lewisham Borough Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8010425.

A Shaggy Bracket fungus is threatening the wellbeing and survival of a public tree.

Updates

  • Yes. This fungi is lethal to trees and should be removed as soon as possible.

  • I sincerely hope someone intervenes to save the tree. The fungal infection will be causing significant decay. If action isn't taken promptly, the tree's demise is likely soon.

  • I suspect the Council tree experts already know that.

  • Have been advised by Lewisham Council that the matter is delayed by volume of work, and to instead use the LoveCleanStreets app for this borough. But the matter remains ongoing, as depicted, not 'Closed.' Use whatever reporting app you prefer Lewisham, but don't shut down reports prematurely, please.

  • L've now found a link indicating medicinal and perceived aesthetic value in this inedible tree killer: https://www.jeremybartlett.co.uk/ 2024/ 09/ 25/ shaggy-bracket-inonotus-hispidus/ It also explains the seasonal darkening process, in the link, and the fact that the fungus turns into something unrecognisably different and black over winter, and drops off, perhaps before it reaches the Council tree surgeons. In fact a report from last year, in the same place, was of a black bracket fungus, which vanished, for reasons then unclear.
