Grass verges, Ambleside Road, Bedworth, CV12 8RR
Reported in the Parking on street category by Trevor Bradley at 17:06, Fri 1 April 2016
Sent to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council 3 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 800166.
Dozens of inconsiderate motorists are, twice daily, parking on the grass verges whilst dropping off and collecting their children from the nearby Canons Primary School in Derwent Road. This totally unnecessary and inconsiderate parking has completely destroyed most of the grass verges over recent months. This type of parking is not a necessity, it has just become a worsening habit from the motorists concerned. Similar problems with inconsiderate parking damaging verges by or near schools, in Warwick, Kenilworth, Crackley and Rugby for example, have been overcome by installing 600mm high wooden post 1.5 – 3 metres apart in the verges. In the circumstances the residents of Ambleside Road must surely qualify for the above action.

A very polite and courteous gentleman did phone me recently but his comments suggested that nothing will be done. This is very concerning as, from a safety point of view, it is imperative that, due to how motorists keep parking in a dangerous manner, that the wooden posts be installed on the grass verges. The Canons School Newsletter this week reports another near miss between vehicle and a child

Maybe not clarified in earlier posts, there is a need to stop dozens of motorists from parking on grass verges, not just because it ruins the verges, but more importantly, from a safety point. At the moment motorists park on the verges and motorists park all over the pavements on the other side of the road. Buses or a fire engine would not get through. From a safety point it needs no cars on verges and cars properly parked on one side of the road, off the pavement

Not a very good experience as the problem has not been addressed in a fair manner. Why do "fixes" such as wooden post installation not take place for Ambleside Bedworth when "fixes" do take place in areas of Kenilworth, Warwick, Rugby etc

Nothing whatsoever has been done to date to control this unacceptable parking. Personally I am now plagued with an additional problem of a council employee now coming home in a large Nuneaton and Bedworth Council commercial very large Ford/Iveco van (reg BL65 YKW) and leaving it overnight opposite my house, making it impossible to get in and out of my drive safely. Why does the council allow their employees to come home in their large vehicles when there is nowhere, from a safety point of view to park them.

I have not been contacted by any of the "Fix My Street Team" and the problem still exists as bad as ever. Another winter of wrecked grass verges and dangerous parking by inconsiderate parents/drivers. I have made my own enquiries and find that a County Councillor and a senior member of Warwick County Council Traffic and Road Safety Group met with the Head of The Canons School on Nov 9th 2016. The residents of Derwent, Kirkstone and Ambleside Rd sincerely hope that some meaningful action will take place in the very near future. Yet another serious near miss between car and pedestrian reported on the schools website on 2nd Dec.

Just an addition to my last post - The problem regarding unacceptable and dangerous parking is totally unnecessary as we are very lucky that the problem is easily fixable - there is more than ample safe road parking places all over the estate for the parents/drivers to park - just need to walk a short distance.

Following Warwickshire Road Safety team and County Councillor having meeting with The Canons Head, the Police attended Derwent Rd for 2 or 3 days week ending 13 Jan, and a couple of days the following week. No further visits until 10 Feb. Clearly the police brief must have been to stop the unacceptable parking etc only in Derwent Rd. At the junction with Ambleside Rd, police bollards were placed all around the corners of Derwent Rd, see attached photo Derwent Rd Junction to Ambleside. The police bollards have remained in place ever since. Although Kirkstone Road is almost directly opposite Derwent Rd, with same very wide pavements at junction corners etc NO bollards were put in place. This did have a major knock on effect, the parking becoming then even worse on the road/pavement and especially the grass verges. For parking issues where there were no bollards, see attached photo Kirkstone Rd junction to Ambleside Rd. The police did not approach any of the motorists that were driving/parking in unacceptable or unsafe places other than Derwent Rd. It is envisaged further meetings will take place by end of February to determine appropriate action.

Warwickshire County Councils "Safer Routes to School Scheme" in Aug 2017 introduced Bollards to corners of pavements Ambleside Rd, Kirkstone Rd and Derwent Rd plus a Trip Rail Fencing on the grass verges of Ambleside Rd. Also Dropped Crossings at the road Junctions. Thanks to Graham Stanley, Warwick County Council and County Councillor Richard Chattaway
