Collapsed drain
Reported via desktop in the Road Defect category by Stephen Redfern at 21:32, Tue 29 July 2025
Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7951767.
There is a 20 foot metal drain gully in the road immediately outside the main entrance to Hayes Primary school (one end of which ends just outside my house at 110 George Lane) Unfortunately there is a 2-3 foot section of road that has collapsed immediately below the gully, dropping by about 6 inches, so that school traffic exiting or entering the school has broken the metal gulley, deepening the hole and causing rain water to accumulate in the hole. I have been reporting this problem since 2022.
Occasionally workmen appear and 'fix' the problem by replacing the broken portion of the metal drain cover BUT without filling in the hole beneath the cover with concrete or something similar. It looks good but the first 4x4 or lorry that comes out of the school entrance into George Lane simply breaks the flimsy unsupported metal and we are back to square one (again)
Can this not be fixed properly and permanently ?

This has been 'awaiting appropriate action' since 2022.
About a month ago workmen placed yellow plastic around the collapsed drain, but no one has appeared in order to actually fix the problem
This is in the road right in front of the school drive, and despite next to no rain recently remains full of water with a 6 inch drop
Can this problem please be addressed before autumn really kicks in, with a 'permanent; fix

The leaf cleaners (Veolia) have told me that what is needed is a 'gully sucker' machine to fix this unsightly and dangerous collapsed drain which has been there for years. If it is not going to be fixed can someone please remove the yellow plastic guards alongside it

Can it be fixed this week ie school half term so the 'fix' doesn't get driven over too much as soon as it is done ?

This issue was 'fixed' some four weeks ago, not by installing a new, stronger metal drain over the gap, but by tarmacing into and over the gap between the two existing metal portions of the drain.
This ensures that the larger part of the existing metal drain can't drain rain water through into the street drain which is just past the gulley, so there is a near permanent large puddle there now when it rains
