Lack of lighting makes pavement/cycle path dangerous at night

Sent to Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7828043.

There is insufficient lighting al this cyclepath pavement so it is pitch black at night. when cycling south visibility is even worse with oncoming vehicle headlights.

I cycle this path 4 days a week and it is very dangerous. It is not helped by the fact that most people don't have anything reflective on their clothes or bikes.

I have had one collision with another cyclist with no lights and completely black clothing. For the same reason I have had many, many, near misses with joggers and walkers to.

Is there any way to raise awareness to wearing some sort of hiviz or lights? I know in the past there have been spot checks in the city but what about where it is dark!

I regularly count 10 plus cyclist with no lights or reflectivity.

  • Thank you for your report. Our budget is consumed by the repair and operation of existing streetlights in the county. We do not have any budget to install new lighting.
