Request for yellow lines outside 17-19 Marsh Cottage

Reported via desktop in the Road Markings - Worn/Faded category anonymously at 13:15, Tue 3 June 2025 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to West Northamptonshire Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7656164.

Report that the stretch of The Marsh running along 17-19 Marsh Cottage is very narrow and that the residents are having problems with heavy vehicles driving very close to the property - especially when vehicles are parked on the other side of the road.

Would it be possible to have double yellow lines or other parking restrictions put in place on that section of road to either deter heavy traffic or reduce problem parking and thus make it easier for large vehicles to pass through?

Can contact be made to discuss the feasibility of this or alternative arrangements?

Thank you for your enquiry. This type of problem is becoming more common and is in part due to an increase in car ownership, especially in built-up areas, where parking is at a premium. A consequence of this is that roads in some locations are not designed to cater for parking which leads to motorists becoming tempted to park indiscriminately, such as close to junctions or in other obstructive ways, and in doing so fail to observe the highway code in this respect.

Where a vehicle is parked in such a way that impedes pedestrian / vehicle access, which may constitute an obstruction, this would be a matter for Northamptonshire Police Safer Communities Team who can carry out the necessary enforcement action against the owners. Northamptonshire Police have enforcement powers if they consider that drivers are creating a parking hazard and there is clearly an obstruction on the public highway. The Police can identify the owner by the registration number of the vehicle(s) and can decide upon the relevant advisory or enforcement action to take. Therefore, you may wish to contact the Neighborhood Policing Team by calling the non-emergency number 101 or by following the link on the Northants Police website: Your area | Northamptonshire Police

Where there is an issue with parking as with this scenario, the Authority are unable to solve the problem with engineering measures without either opposition from the local community or the displacement of vehicles to another location, and therefore rely on motorists to park in a sensible and considerate manner. There are occasions when preventative parking measures would be of benefit, such as waiting restrictions which can be implemented to address a permanent instance of dangerous parking. When considering these requests however, it is necessary to keep in mind the displacement of vehicles and where these will be transferred. As with many highway related problems it’s about striking a balance that addresses the issues without creating new ones. If you think this area would benefit from waiting restrictions, please use the following link for further information on how to make an application; Request new parking restrictions | West Northamptonshire Council (westnorthants.gov.uk)
