Wrongly constructed raised crossing causing damage
Reported in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 09:44, Sun 7 February 2016
Sent to Cardiff Council 1 minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 762250.
Sloping edges of pedestrian crossing have been wrongly constructed. Its slopes are curved not straight and, most importantly, the resurfaced road does not mate with it horizontally but has a dip in it, making the effective angle of one the sloped sides of the crossing more acute than it should be. Large vehicles hitting this crossing is causing damage to adjacent buildings at Century Whatf.

The council reckoned that raised crossings do not cause problems to buildings! (They should try living in my flat when a heavy lorry hits the thing!) Have enlisted the help of the landlord of the building. Council clearly does not want to understand reality but is relying on theoretical calculations about such raised crossings. If they are not constructed correctly (like this one) then their theory is invalid.

The council at first denied anything could be wrong with crossings of this type because someone had published a paper asserting that only if a building were within one metre of one would it suffer shocks. I cannot imagine a situation where any building would be that close. But after enlisting the help of my councillor a surveyor measured the thing and confirmed that it had not been built properly. They have confirmed that they will take remedial action but have not yet done so.

The situation has not changed. I am still waiting for the council to rectify the problem they have admitted exists.

I received a letter from the council agreeing that something should be done and they have painted yellow lines on it, presumably where a contractor will have to cut out and reinstate the problematical geometry of the raised crossing,

The situation has not changed. A promise of a solution, but nothing has happened on the ground.

The council eventually surveyed the crossing and realised it had been wrongly constructed. Our councillor also took up our case. It has been properly rectified.
