Sharp edges on metal in play area

Dear Sirs,

I would like to apprise you of a safety issue in Millennium Square, which resulted in an injury, at around 10:25 on Sunday 25 May, to my 8-year-old granddaughter, Mila Purvis.

The injury was treated by a young man named Reuben, who was the on-duty trained first aider at "We The Curious". He mentioned to us that they have to deal with numerous accidents in Millennium Square!

In the good weather, numerous youngsters were playing in the water feature, and our two grandchildren joined in. My wife and I were very close by, seated on the edge of the marble slabs which form part of the water feature at the north east corner of the Square (in fact, either side of the pathway that leads through the curved "wall of water").

It seems that the marble slabs have had pieces of stainless steel inserted into the corners (I guess to discourage skateboarders from running their boards along the edges of the slabs). I think there are around a dozen such pieces of metal and most of them have had their square edges de-burred and rounded slightly. But at least 3 of the pieces have not been so treated, and the square edges are sharp enough to cause an injury. Please see attached two photos.

Mila's s injury was a relatively minor surface wound to her left foot (more of a scrape than a cut, though with some bleeding). With the prompt treatment of the first-aider, I am hopeful that it will heal quickly, but it certainly spoiled our fun and led us to curtail our day out.

More importantly, I think the injury could very easily have been a lot worse and I do think the pieces of metal should be attended to promptly. I am a retired engineer and would suggest that, as the metal is stainless steel rather than just carbon steel, it will probably need a powered grinder, rather than just a hand file.

I would be grateful for a specific reply to this email, and confirmation when the work has been carried out.

Yours faithfully
