Blind junction is dangerous

Reported via iOS anonymously at 12:06, Sun 23 March 2025

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council and West Oxfordshire District Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7322036.

Whilst cycling or driving here this corner is very dangerous and needs a mirror to be able to see if a car or bike is coming from either direction. Many near on collisions have happened but nothing has ever been done here to imporve the busy area between Cogges and Witney. I believe this puts people off using this cycle way - but goes agaisnt witneys green initiatives

  • Thank you for your report. The County Council do not provide or support the use of road mirrors on the highway. The image they provide can be misleading in terms of vehicle speed and distance giving drivers a false sense of security, potentially leading to vehicles emerging injudiciously.

Mirrors are also prone to vandalism, fogging in poor atmospheric conditions and glare from the sun or car headlights.

If, however, permission is granted by a landowner adjacent to, but off the highway and therefore outside the jurisdiction of the County, a suitable post and mirror may be erected.

The County could accept no responsibility for a mirror so erected. We do not give permission for a mirror to be erected on an area of highway maintainable at public expense.
