6th report of major crack progression in my front wall

Reported via mobile in the Trees category by Danny Hoskins at 12:48, Thu 20 March 2025

Sent to Brighton and Hove City Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7309400.

At my house 34 Queen's Park terrace. I have continued to photograph the weekly destruction of my large front wall. A crack appeared in pavement halfway from street and nearby tree>progressed to my wall where it then erupted the pavement directly in front of my wall> from which point a faint line appeared in wall directly above pavement crack > each week crack depth increases > now at stage where clearly visible . Wall supports a large raised front garden from which there is no vegetation that could impact or has grown significantly. The evidence of where pavement crack originated clearly points to something underneath pavement at that point which then spread towards my wall , and when hitting wall started to break through my wall and erupt pavement . Pavements team alerted months ago with weekly updates > other than acknowledgement no action/response. Common sense suggests pointless repairing pavement as this is not cause of damage , it's what is below. Fact a 7 year old root barrier in place is not evidence it's either been broken through or around. Lack of response increases likelihood of my wall collapsing and needing costly repair which at this stage is probably not necessary. Wall faces a busy thoroughfare of schoolchildren and local bus stop - a dangerous risk if it collapsed and damage to my home. Abriculture dept refusing so far to inspect for a cause that I suspect they know is issue. Surely none of this is fair ; acceptable or kind and will lead to significant cost and problem if not rectified while at this manageable stage. I'd like to meet inspection team when /if they visit as this is significant risk to my home .

Updates

  • No - now 13 weeks in - crack significantly bigger - from base to top. Potential wall collapse could kill a pedestrian and cause my 3 storey house to subside. Criminal negligence from counci who want to wait further 6 months to see if pavement breaks up further as pedestrian issue whereas tree roots now eating into my wall which is being destroyed !
