Flood in road on bend caused by poor drainage
Reported via mobile in the Flooding on Road category anonymously at 10:40, Saturday 8 February 2025
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 7103939.
This road floods every time it rains. Often it is completely impassable, sometimes you can drive very slowly on one side of the road. This cannot be good for the engine and most likely dangerous for the brakes. It is on a bend in the road which adds to the danger as at either end of the flood drivers cannot see cars approaching from the opposite direction. There are also potholes in this location which are not visible under the flood. The entire stretch of this road between this flood and the 'Berkshire' sign as you enter Emmer Green is in a very poor condition. It is a patchwork of cracks, potholes and worn out road surface. It is a bad portrayal of the Highways department of OCC. The moment you enter Berkshire is clear not by the road sign but by the smooth road suface.

Would be great if you could take advantage of all this dry weather to prevent this road flooding in the next downpour. I'm pretty sure the flooding sign is still in place, doesn't look like any action has been taken whatsoever.
With the threat of housing developments nearby, I honestly struggle to understand how OCC have demonstrated their obligations in maintaining these roads. Just look at the boundary between Reading and Oxfordshire, it's night and day. If this is the shape of things to come then additional housing is going to be a disaster for those who live in the area already.

Thank you for bringing the drainage issue at Kiln Road to our attention. We appreciate your proactive approach in helping us maintain the quality of our highways.
As the issue was reported after the previous severe weather event, which has now passed, we are pleased to confirm that the Parish or Town of Sonning Common is scheduled for gully emptying during the Fourth quarter of this financial year. All highway surface water assets in the area are planned to be thoroughly cleansed within this timeframe. Work to clean and empty every highway drainage gully in Oxfordshire this year, and every year going forward, is now under way.
Our gully emptying programme is carefully planned to use a range of key factors to prioritise locations throughout the year. This ensures our resources are directed where they are most needed and can have the greatest impact.
The prioritisation process considers:
Areas with a known history of property or frequent carriageway flooding.
Locations with a high volume of public drainage reports.
The condition and maintenance history of highway surface water assets. To support this, we use an internal asset management system called Kaarbontech, which maintains a detailed record of all historic maintenance activity. This helps us identify gullies and associated infrastructure that have not been serviced for some time, ensuring no part of the network is overlooked.
This data-led approach enables us to move beyond reactive maintenance and adopt a more proactive, risk-based strategy. It enhances network resilience and reduces the likelihood of flooding, particularly in known hotspot areas.
Please note that the proposed schedule may be subject to change due to severe weather or resource availability.
Your report has now been closed, and we remain committed to ensuring that the necessary actions are taken in a timely manner.
