Fouled pavement due to overhanging trees / junction of Pickhurst Rise and the Drive, West Wickham

Reported via mobile in the Private Tree overhanging highway category anonymously at 09:02, Friday 3 January 2025

Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6924794.

These trees have been overhanging the pavement for a considerable length of time (5+ years) and are now growing out over the road. This results in a constant issue of bird droppings from the above branches fouling the pavement in huge quantities, which makes it impossible to walk on the pavement without stepping in these and very unhygienic as people’s shoes pick this up as well as dogs walking. The only way to avoid the area is to walk in the road. Furthermore, at night there is little to no illumination from the street lights due to the branches blocking out light, which makes the area dark and unsafe. These branches need to be cut back heavily.

  • The area neighbourhood officer has visited and the trees have already been cut back to our recommended height of 2.4m so no further action will be taken, however, a separate report has been logged to clear the tree debris along this section of the road, although no bird fouling was seen at time of inspection. • Thanks for the update.

I have attached a picture of the pavement under the trees, taken today 15/01 at 12:52pm, which clearly shows the extent of the bird fouling, and this is only one section. I cannot accept there was no bird fouling when the area neighbourhood officer looked at the area as it is like this every day and has not been cleaned.

This is unhygienic and not what residents (like myself) in the road should have to walk through every day. I would kind ask your officer to revisit and reassess the issue.

  • Thank you for your additional comment,

As outlined above the council’s street cleansing service providers have been asked to attend and sweep the area, please note that the councils baseline cleansing service is for a dry sweep only and any detritus and other loose materials will be cleared as part of that attendance, we do not jet wash pavements were there are bird droppings.
