Follow-Up on Damaged Bench Concern and FOI Request

Reported via mobile in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 00:59, Thursday 2 January 2025

Sent to West Sussex County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6919502.

I am writing regarding a damaged bench I reported to the council some time ago. Unfortunately, I did not receive an update on my enquiry, nor does it appear that any works have been carried out to address the issue. Given the length of time since my initial report, I presumed that the council had repaired the bench.

However, over the Christmas period, I sat on the bench and fell backwards due to its condition, hitting my head and back on the ground. While I am not seeking compensation, I am requesting the council to take reasonable measures to safeguard residents who report highway safety concerns.

I would like to reiterate my request for the bench to be repaired and ask for clarity on the following points through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request: 1. Why was my initial report not actionable? 2. How many other concerns or reports have been raised regarding this damaged bench? 3. If the bench does not fall under the council’s responsibility, were any actionable concerns raised with the local borough council or other relevant bodies to address this safety issue?

Please provide a timeline for when the necessary repairs will be carried out and keep me updated on the progress of this matter. Additionally, I would appreciate a detailed response on how the council plans to resolve the issues surrounding my complaint and the inaction following my initial report.

I look forward to your response soon
