Grit for icy roads placed at base of trees

Several trees in Fourth Avenue and Galton Street have had what looks like de-icing grit put around their bases. I'm not sure but think this grit is mixed with salt and would damage or kill the trees. I first noticed this on 12th December. Hope you can help.
