Flytipping on Sly Street

Reported in the Flytipping category anonymously at 13:12, Thu 27 August 2015

Sent to Tower Hamlets Borough Council 3 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 681714.

Hi, We are having continuous issues with local residents dumping rubbish outside of Tate Apartments on Sly Street, E1 2BE. Every single day rubbish is dumped outside our homes including bags of domestic waste, packaging, beds, mattresses, sofas, chairs etc. I have also seen rats in the rubbish heap on numerous occasions. The rubbish is nearly always piled outside the refuse cupboard of Tate Apartments meaning we are often unable to dispose of our own rubbish correctly. This issue has been previously investigated by the council and I have seen that the bags have been taped closed after being searched. However the issue has not been addressed sufficiently and the dumping continues daily. This is particularly problematic on the summer when the rubbish pile smell terrible. It is a serious problem that needs addressing by the council urgently.

Updates

  • FIMS isn't really designed to deal with enforcement or long term problems; it is designed to get unexpected new tips cleared quickly.

You would almost certainly be better off trying to establish who was the enforcement officer involved previously and communicating with them directly.

One other point: if there was evidence obtained when the items were opened, the council might need to preserve that evidence in place until the case is resolved.

In practice, the council is going to be dealing with many similar incidents as people renting flats use the anonymity got get away with such crimes. In this case, the place where they dump is covered by the council, but I know from experience that flat dwellers will also dump in the communal grounds of the flats, resulting in costs to the service charges.

You might also want to investigate getting the fire brigade to take enforcement action as it seems to me that the rubbish is blocking a door, which may well be on a fire escape route, the the rubbish under the window is a threat to the rooms behind that window.

LFB have been having a campaign about the fire risks associated with rubbish: http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/ FiresAreRubbish.asp

Contact information for the LFB enforcement teams can be found at http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/ FireSafetyRegulationTeams.asp

    Not from the council.
