I would like to bring to your attention the significant number of advertising boards for events that have been erected by Hamptons Estate Agents in Henley-on-Thames, in violation of planning law.
Under the Town and Country Planning Act, advertising for ‘travelling showmen’ is permitted up to two weeks before an event, to allow small entertainment businesses such as circuses and fairs to promote their trade to local residents. However, this provision does not apply to a national estate agency using commercial events to advertise their company by illegally erecting boards on railings and roadsides. This not only causes ill feeling among local residents but also undermines the proper use of the advertising allowance.
These boards are not the first instance of such behaviour by this company. During the summer, they erected numerous signs across South Oxfordshire to promote a commercial boat show, placed over six weeks in advance of the event. As the boat show does not qualify as a ‘travelling showman’ event, this was clearly another violation of the Planning Act.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I would appreciate it if you could take action to have these signs removed and ensure that Hamptons Estate Agents ceases this practice in the future.
