Pavement repair after being dug up unacceptable

Fao Steve Buffin - Area Highway Rep

Hi Steve,

My name is Martin Shipley of 5, Murrells Road, English Bicknor, Coleford GL16 7PL.

A few months ago the pavement outside our home (and other nearby properties in the village) was dug up for the 4th time in 4 years, on this occasion by the National Grid. Their purpose was to lay up-to-date power cables, following a series of power failures within the village. Fair enough.

My reason for contacting you is about the end result after they filled in the trench they had dug and then laid tarmac over it. It looks awful for a number of reasons:- They've used black tarmac, which doesn't match to the existing pavement colour; They've made no attempt to make it look even throughout Murrells Road, hence the channel has been tarmacked in a variety of shapes and widths; They've left, untouched, several highlight markings they made on the pavement before starting the initial work and these are in a number of colours; The whole job looks unsightly, such that I feel it has actually devalued my property. I know that any company that digs up a road or pavement generally just fills in and tarmacs the least amount of area they can get away with, but I feel strongly that this is simply not good enough anymore.

Why should I have to live with an unsightly pavement? Surely they could have skimmed over the full width of the pavement and in a more aesthetically pleasing colour than jet black!!

I enclose a few photos of what I have to look at several times a day.

I respectfully request that something is done to fully resurface the pavement outside my home and all along the same stretch of Murrells Road.
