Upton Turn A418

Reported via desktop in the Hedge problem category anonymously at 11:30, Thursday 26 September 2024 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Buckinghamshire Council 1 week, 1 day, 1 hour, 12 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 6518532.

The hedgerow to the right of the bus stop (towards Aylesbury) is over grown. My 11 year old is the only child using the 110 bus to Lord Williams school and has to step out towards the road, in rush hour, to flag the bus down. He cannot be seen otherwise by the oncoming driver. This seems incredibly dangerous on a very fast road. It is therefore not possible for him to use the bus shelter as it is invisible to the bus driver, the hedge covers blocks all visability. As a result we have to use the bus stop at New Road, Dinton as this is slightly more visable. However the hedge still blocks the view for the driver and my son cannot wait in the bus shelter. Again he has to step into the edge of the verge to be seen. This seems very dangerous on such a fast road. Both shelters require the surrounding hedgerow to be cut back.

  • All wild birds are protected. This includes their nests (whilst in use or being built) as well as any eggs the nest may contain. Under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 (as amended), it is an offence to:
    • intentionally kill, injure or take any wild bird
    • intentionally damage, destroy or take the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built (nests of golden eagle, white tailed eagle and osprey are protected all year round)
    • intentionally destroy an egg of any wild bird
    • intentionally or recklessly disturb certain wild birds or their dependent young while they are nesting (including disturbance of nesting young)
Although no dates are legally stated between which hedges cannot be trimmed, cut, laid or coppiced, the main bird breeding season is recognised as being between 1 March and 31 July which we adhere to. Please note, if the issue reported is classified by our Highway Officer as an emergency, arrangements will be made to make the hedge safe for both road and pedestrian users in line with our Highways Safety Inspection Policy.

Buckinghamshire Highways operates two methods for safety defect identification; proactively by Highway Inspectors who identify safety defects in line with Highways Safety Inspection Policy and reactively by Highway Officers following reports from the public.

We are responsible for the maintenance of 2,200 miles of road and 1,500 miles of footpaths in Buckinghamshire, this means we have to prioritise works based on a set criteria which includes issues which may present an immediate danger, or significant inconvenience to users of the roads/footpaths, or to the structural condition of the highway and assets contained with the highway boundary.

Whilst priority defects will receive a repair within appropriate timescales as dictated by the above policy, more minor defects such as the defect you have reported may not be immediately scheduled for repair.

State changed to: No further action
