Public winter salt bin at jct Palace Rd and the steep Anerley Hill, is an eyesore and has lost both its lid and any spade side door.

Reported via mobile in the Public Litter Bin category anonymously at 21:06, Tue 10 September 2024 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Bromley Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6459264.

Public winter salt bin at jct Palace Rd and the steep Anerley Hill, is an eyesore and has lost both its lid and any spade side door.

This means salt is needlessly and expensively washed away in rain polluting the drains and then rivers and meaning salt will not be there when needed.

Please repair or replace the salt bin.

  • I am very concerned by your reply. On thinking about the salt grit bin again, only the upper lid needs replacement. The lower aperture is presumably where shovels are inserted. The proportionate response is to replace the lid. Removing the salt grit bin would be to 'throw the baby out with the bathwater'. The Crystal Palace area and Anerley Hill is one of the highest points in LBB with a steep 1 in 10 hill. In icy weather the current local provision of accessible salt grit is vital. The saving is of road accident collisions and damage, pedestrian falls, driver or passenger injuries or fatalities. This will be at vast personal loss, expense or NHS treatment compared with the cost of replacing a bin lid, or even the whole bin. Gritter lorries tend to main roads, and take time to deploy. This also steep side road, Palace Rd, may not get gritted with cars sliding out onto Anerley Hill, which itself may not be gritted. Pedestrians on ungritted council footways may also be unnecessarily put in danger eg. risk of breaking bones, pelvis or head injury. I have no idea whether Snow Friends are nearby, but I think it unlikely that social housing flat dwellers or those in converted Victorian houses will have anything like ready access to the current volume and public access to salt grit as at present. I believe that Highways Authorities have a statutory duty to maintain highways in a safe state. Please reconsider your stated assertion that instead of replacing the lid, or the bin itself, that you will remove the salt grit bin completely! I shall take this further if necessary.

  • Please do not remove the salt bin. Perhaps we will have snow and ice in the New Year. Won't that make Bromley Council a source of ridicule and callousnessto remove the salt when it is needed? It is there to save accidents for road users and injury to pedestrians with consequences for our hard-pressed A&E services. I have not seen the bin recently. It is a small effort to replace the hinges. Millions of pounds are spent replacing paving stones etc on Bromley High Street but you are saying that you can't replace two hinges? Please do not oblige me to complain directly to the Chief Executive and relevant Departmental Director, write to the press or post on social media to get this attended to. I look forward to your reply.

  • As previously explained the council's policy is to remove damaged salt bins. The footway at this location is already on the maintained locations which is cleared during snow events and we would recommend any local residents to visit the council's website to look into the council's gritting policy. A map of the treated footways can be found on our website https://www.bromley.gov.uk/ roads-highways-pavements/ road-gritting . The salt bin in question will be removed shortly and this matter is now closed.
