Completely overgrown shrubbery on Eltringham Road

Reported via mobile in the Restricted Visibility / Overgrown / Overhanging category anonymously at 13:44, Wednesday 7 August 2024 using FixMyStreet Pro

Sent to Northumberland County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6327803.

I am writing to request the council come and complete some basic road safety and maintenance work on Eltringham Road in Prudhoe. The bushes and hedges along the side of the roads and paths are overgrown to the point of it being dangerous, and the drains are blocked which causes road flooding through the estate in heavy rain.

As residents we have attempted to clear some of the area ourselves but do not have the ability or capacity to maintain the entire road. We have attempted to clear some of the paths at the estate end of the road so that pedestrians and particularly and parents or carers with children or pushchairs do not have to walk in the road, and we have attempted to cut back some of the hedges and bushes so that cars are not scraping past them and so that drivers have better visibility down the road to at least be able to see the pedestrians who inevitably have had to walk in the road due to the overgrown paths. I personally have filled my own garden waste bin which I also pay extra for but as mentioned before we do not have the capacity nor should we have to do work that should be taken care of by the council. The only maintenance we have had on our road or estate recently has been someone cutting the grass which neither helps pedestrians or drivers stay safe.

I have attached images showing some of the work we have tried to do, and a quick walk or drive down Eltringham Road will very easily highlight the dangers that we are facing. The overgrown hedges are significantly encroaching onto the road making visibility extremely poor and effectively halfing the width of useable road. This combined with the lack of maintained footpaths leads to a very real and constant risk of collisions with pedestrians. The build up of gravel at the bottom of the road not only has blocked the drains causing flood risks but also makes for a very poor driving surface and skid risk at the exact point where the footpath ends and the footpath from the adjoining bypass crosses Eltringham Road.
