Traffic lights wrongly set

Reported via mobile in the Traffic Lights (permanent only) category anonymously at 14:50, Friday 14 June 2024

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 6108645.

I have written to you before more than once about the problem of drivers making a legitimate turn across the junction of Morton, Banbury, Marston Ferry Roads in Summertown, Oxford. You have replied that you have solved the problem by 'putting a hood' on the traffic light. Your 'solution' DOES NOT WORK. Several times very day there is a screeching of brakes, cacophony of horns, related confusion, near miss collisions. By the time the driver has worked out that he does not have to stop at the red light he is faced with, the lights change leading to even more confusion, chaos, and blockage of juntion. That multiple turning junction is extremely dangerous. The problem is not fixed. Please return your attention to it quickly.

  • We are required to provide a secondary "red/amber/green" signal for north bound Banbury Road traffic which needs to be in the field of view of any vehicle waiting at that stop line. The geometry of the junction restricts this "red/amber/green" being located in a different position. So to try to reduce the occurrences of vehicles stopping by mistake we have installed horizontal louvers onto the red signal to try to hide the signal from turning traffic. We believe this has been partially successful, but unfortunately it does not always work. An Engineer has checked the alignment of the louver and confirmed that it is correctly installed. For the time being we have exhausted our options for a more effective solution.
